Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these medications need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
